The women's movement helped to bring women accurate information about their bodies and their sexuality. How does Meridian's growing knowledge of herself as a sexual being change who she is, who she thinks she might become?

Once that door was opened, there was no going back. Meridian was standing up for herself, believing she could fulfill her dream of continuing her education, and thought if she divorced Alden it would solve most of her problems. But once again, it was a man who was leading her to make these changes.

Some of the sex scenes were pretty funny, but I can imagine how sheltered and unknowing she was about sex. When you can recognize that you are a sexual being and are comfortable with that, it can give you a confidence that you are worthy of whatever you choose to do with your life.

I grieved that she met Clay and she was already so old. When the book made that big leap in her age I felt like life passed her by and felt so bad for her. It showed, though, that age is not a limit to changing perspectives, for feeling, for connecting with others. Alden actually seemed more naive and unexperienced in life than Clay did. I think Clay helped Meridian grow and Meridian did the same for Clay.

It awakens a sense of pleasure, happiness and joy in her that she has never known. She realizes that she has the power over those emotions and the ability to bring them into her life in other facets without any mans help.
